T Party Tea Party

T(ea) serves many purposes within the queer community. It is gossip; it is a rebellious dance; it is testosterone; it is trans people who love other trans people. Tea is taken hot or cold, sweet or unsweet, with or without milk, loose or in a bag. Making tea is a ritual, unique to the individual. Tea is also community, whether gathering in a kitchen or meeting in a park on a nice day. Tea is being vulnerable and affectionate with your friends and partners.
T Party Tea Party is a series of images of trans and non-binary folks in queer platonic relationships taken on expired black and white film, and developed in butterfly pea flower tea—infamous for brewing a bright blue, then turning a pink or purple when acidity is introduced. The resulting film negatives appear either blue, pink, or purple when scanned as color positives. These images are then printed with cyanotype on empty, used tea bags. Creating this piece is a labor of love: every step is meticulous, intentional, and ritualistic. The final images have gone through many transformative steps to get where they are, much like being a trans person. The beauty of transformation is never-ending.
